Avec Style: The 10 Rules for Subtracting 10 Years

Mary Cassatt - Lilacs in a Window, 1880

I have never longed for a more youthful appearance...  will it eventually happen?

The 10 Rules for Subtracting 10 Years

1.  Take an interest in current events, in fashion, yes, but also in art, music, food and decor.  Stay connected!

2.  Add a touch of folly to your appearance, with star accessories, daring prints or lively colors.  (Louise Labrecque is a big fan of star accessories...)

3.  Don't be afraid to visit trendy boutiques.  They are for you too.  Who knows, you might find a scarf in the colors of the season, an amusing tee shirt, or a pair of extraordinary shoes?

4.  Are you dynamic?  Your clothes should reflect this!  Look for details that lend some personality to your clothes and accessories - buckles, patchworks, stitching details.  (Pam, I'm looking at you...)

5.  Flatter your silhouette with garments that fit well, with feminine cuts.  Avoid looking like you're wearing a potato sack!

6.  Swap your classic shoes and handbags for those more brightly colored and "of the moment".

7.  Set aside your classic jewelry, and play with some fantasy necklaces, bracelets or rings that are the trend of the season.  They're not expensive, and their effect can be spectacular.

8.  Keep your hair healthy - quit fussing about it being grey.  Keep your hair well hydrated, and get a great cut.

9.  A beautiful smile is worth a thousand skin creams! Whiten your teeth if necessary - over the counter whiteners give great results.

10.  Pamper your skin with nourishing, anti-aging creams.  And don't forget how much difference a touch of foundation can make to even the coloring of your skin, and  illuminate your face.

Avec Style:The 10 Rules of Color Harmony

Color is often the first thing to be addressed when fashion and personal style are the subject...

The  10 Rules of Color Harmony

1.  Limit the number of colors in your outfit to no more than 3.  You will in this way create a visual harmony.

2.  A print will often include more than 3 colors.  In order to create balance, focus on the color which is most prominent in the print when finishing your outfit.  Example:  A black jacket is a good complement to a dress of multicolored flowers on a black background.

3.  To lighten your silhouette, it is preferable to wear lighter/brighter colors on the top half of your body, and darker ones on the bottom, rather than the inverse.  Bright colors seem visually lighter than darker colors do, and they also bring a flattering light to your face.

4. Warm, bright colors - red, orange, fuchsia, yellow - give off an aura which is synonymous with energy. Wear them on rainy days!

5.  One color can influence the way in which another appears.   Example:  Grey pants and a pale pink blouse can seem dreary.  But white pants worn with the same pink blouse can appear luminous.

6.  An outfit composed of three colors - in cameo - is elegant and attractive.  (note - they're talking about 3 closely related colors) Example: Choose coffee brown pants with an ivory blouse and a sable brown jacket.

7.  Colors in a fabric that is shiny or reflective will seem lighter, because their surface reflects lights. On the other hand, the color of a fabric which is matte will seem darker and more sober.

8.  Green, worn near your face - especially if shiny - accentuates discolorations in your skin.  In the same way, shiny fabrics will accentuate the appearance of oily skin.

9.  In order to effectively accent a monochromatic outfit, include a touch of a complementary color.  Example: A blue suit with an orange blouse,or a red dress with a green handbag.

10.  There are the neutral colors which are easiest for most people to wear: black, white, grey, beige, navy, brown, khaki. (Not sure this is true...)

Avec Style: The 10 Rules of Style

So I'm off running around the country again, and will be mostly out of internet range for at least a couple of weeks - my return date is VERY uncertain.  But I've queued up a number of posts for you, on a variety of subjects - colors, books, some Chic Sightings...

Cross your fingers that this adventure goes well!

love,
Janice

I've had this book for a while, and now that I'm travelling - AGAIN - for my familial obligations, it seems like a good time to share with you the many interesting insights I found here.

First warning: if you read or speak French, note that this book is from Canada.  99% of the writing is spot on to what you read in France, but every now and then a word will trip me up.  I view it as a learning experience!

One of the salient design elements of this book is that she distills a lot of advice into a series of "10 Rules", so for the next few days I'm going to translate those for your enjoyment, and toss in my thoughts or observations if they seem relevant.

(don't you just love the subtitle - Secrets of a Well Thought-Out Wardrobe?)

The 10 Rules of Style

1.  Fashion is never banal.  Amuse yourself and take risks, without ever forgetting to stay elegant.  It's the key to success. (easier said than done, for me!)

2.  Put your best foot - or features - forward.  You have beautiful legs, or a ravishing decolletage?  Show it off!

3.  Avoid being too "matchy matchy".  Pay scant attention to established codes, and instead mix your styles, such as a classic skirt with a bohemian blouse, or jeans with a satin jacket.

4.  Always include something that shows your personal style - a star accessory, a unique color, a daring print, an original cut...

5.  Is your outfit tired?  Work on your accessories - they are the signature of your style.

6.  Adapt to the trends, with respect to your age and your body type, without becoming predictable or boring.

7.  Don't try too hard! It's better to be classic than to be unnaturally hip!  (now, I'm struggling with the balance between trendy and classic again...)

8.  Don't limit yourself by seasons.   Mix them up - a summer dress with a wool cardigan...

9.  Clothing is NOT more important than you are.   One must see your personality, wearing the clothes - not the other way around.

10.  It's better to be chic than ordinary.
